The Girons are festive events organized in summer in each of the four regions of the canton of Vaud : Broye, Center, Nord and Pied-du-Jura. Under the aegis of the Fédération Vaudoise des Jeunesses Campagnardes (FVJC) founded in 1919, these meetings aim to limit rural exodus while promoting the relations between young people from the different villages of the canton. This year, the setting up of the Giron du Nord has been attributed to the village of Champagne, on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel. The proposed animations include sporting games such as athletics competitions, wrestling, and the tug-of-war that traditionally takes place at the end of the weekend.

Tug-of-war originated in China in the 8th century and was used for military training purposes. Practiced in many countries and popularized in Europe by the naval community in the 19th century, this sport discipline has been included in the Olympic Games from 1900 to 1920.

During the Youth festivities, teams are made up of 4 to 5 boys of the same village. They begin by digging furrows in the ground to consolidate their abutments, and rub their hands with soil to dry them and allow a better grip on the rope. The strongest one is preferably placed at the end to ensure anchoring, and at the front, the more nervous raises and shakes the rope to destabilize the opponents. Troughout the contest, the competitors exert phenomenal tractions ; the tension on the rope can reach 2 tons. The discipline involves more technical and strategic aspects than one might think. Beyond physical power, the qualities required are mental strength and group coordination. The coach gives the rhythm of the "pulls" and warns of "counter-attacks" inflicted by the adverse team. The round ends when an entire team is dislodged from its zone, but the intense effort can last up to 3 minutes, after which the victory is given to the formation that has the advantage. At Champagne, the regional competition was won by the formidable boys of Provence-Mutrux and, in the category of the guests of another district, those of Givrins came out victorious.
